Rearcross 'A' 2 - Clodiagh Rangers 'A' 2
Rearcross 'A' emerged from this encounter played last Sunday morning in Rearcross
with their first draw in the league since 10th October 2000 when Rearcross
recorded a 2-2 draw against Thurles Town 'A' in Bilboa. Rearcross made a promising
start to this game and went ahead in the 10th minute when Derek O'Toole swung
in the cross from the left for Paul Murphy to head home from close range despite
the best efforts of the Clodiagh keeper. Rearcross were unlucky not to go
two in front minutes later when Emmet Steed's headed effort wasn't far of
the mark. Clodiagh playing against the wind in the opening half got in to
the game as the half progressed and levelled in the 30th minute when a free
kick on the right flank was headed to the roof of the net by Alan Tierney
to leave the sides all square at the half time whistle. Rearcross were again
dominant at the beginning of the second half and came close with a shot from
Paul Murphy two minutes into the half, Joe O'Brien's headed effort from a
Derek O'Toole corner kick shortly after was inches wide of the target. Clodiagh
went ahead for the second time on 56 minutes when the Liam McCullagh sliced
the ball to the corner of the net after poor defending. Clodiagh were now
dictating the pace and Rearcross had to battle all the way to stay in the
game, Derek O'Toole made it two all in the 25th minute when he ran on and
knocked the ball to the net after good work by Paul Murphy on the left. Rearcross
might have taken the lead in the 32nd minute when Derek O'Toole broke through
the centre, however the Clodiagh custodian advanced and saved to avert the
danger. Clodiagh made a strong finish with Declan Carr coming close in the
89th minute with a well struck free kick from the edge of the eighteen yard
box that deflected off the crossbar.
