Rearcross 'A's inaccuracy in front of goals was to prove costly as a rampant Kilcommon 'B' selection claimed victory in the final of the Kilcommon Festival Tournament played on Monday evening after a dramatic penalty shootout that saw all twenty two players have a go at the target from the penalty spot. Rearcross made a bright start to this game and Joey Nolan was unlucky for Rearcross early in the proceedings when his shot on goal was deflected off the upright, Kilcommon defended bravely in the opening half with Ollie Carr covering well to block an Adrian Hurley shot that seemed to be goal bound in the 14th minute. Derek O'Toole was unlucky a minute later when his headed effort from a corner kick hit the upright. A well delivered pass out of the Kilcommon defence by Leo Ryan minutes later found Donal Gilmartin in space, however Anthony Ryan advanced to avert the danger. Kilcommon came close on 18 minutes when Seamus Butler broke on the left, however the resulting attempt was just wide of the upright. Kilcommon took the lead in the 25th minute when Donal Gilmartin shot the net from a free kick outside the eighteen yard box. Rearcross were quick to react and equalised inside a minute when an Adrian Hurley free kick was headed to the net by Derek O'Toole from close range. Kilcommon's Ollie Carr had to be alert to head a Derek O'Toole shot over the bar and out for a corner two minutes into the second half. Rearcross were denied with ten minutes remaining when Thomas Kennedy's cross from the left wing was headed inches over the bar by Derek O'Toole when a goal looked certain.. A good move in the 29th minute involving John Ryan Luke and Adrian Hurley made room for Declan O'Toole inside the area, however the ball didn't fall too kindly and the resulting strike was wide of the target. With seconds remaining Anthony Ryan had to be alert to save a headed effort from under the crossbar. Kilcommom proved the more accurate on a 9-8 scoreline in a penalty shoot out that saw the quality of the penalties improve as the shootout progressed. For the record Joe O'Brien, Paul Murphy, Derek O'Toole, Declan O'Toole, Martin McLoughlin, Liam O'Toole, Adrian Hurley, Liam Nolan(B) were on target for Rearcross while the Kilcommon marksmen were Seamus Butler, Leo Ryan, Ger Keane, Pat Butler, Willie O'Dwyer, Dan Quinlan, Kevin Mullins, Paul Quigley, & JJ Carr.
