(Blackcastle win 5-4 after a penalty shootout)

Rearcross 'A' made their exit from the Premier Division Cup last Sunday morning in Rearcross after a penalty shootout against Blackcastle 'A' when the sides were level on a one all scoreline after extra time. Exchanges were evenly shared in the opening period of the game with both sets of defences sticking to their task well, Blackcastles' demands for a penalty were turned down midway through the half after a vital tackle had thwarted a Blackcastle atteck, while the homeside's claim for a penalty appeared to be justified when Thomas Kennedy was taken down on the edge of the eighteen yard box in the 31st minute, but had to content with a free kick that came to nothing. Blackcastle took the lead in the 42nd minute when Johnny Doran broke on the right flank and blasted to the back of the net from twelve yards. Rearcross held their own in the second half and grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 29th minute when Thomas Kennedy's cross from the left was headed to the net by Derek O'Toole. The game was taken to extra time after the sides were deadlocked at the final whistle. Oliver Kennedy kept Rearcross in the game when he saved from the penalty spot in the 104th minute. Blackcastle booked their quarterfinal spot with a 5-4 result from the penalty shootout. John Ryan Luke, Thomas Kennedy, Emmet Steed and Darren Malone were on target for Rearcross while J McCarthy, S Owens, D Byrne, D McBride, E Byrne were the marksmen for Blackcastle 'A'.
The Rearcross defensive unit was very dominant throughout with John Ryan Luke, Martin McLoughlin & Shane Reynolds making crucial tackles late in the game. Rearcross will be disappointed with this result, but will have to lift the heads for the Tipperary Cup which will be the Club's last chance of silverware in the North Tipperary & District League for the 2001/2002 season.
