Rearcross 'A' 2 - Arra Rovers 4
A disappointing performance from Rearcross 'A' resulted in a 4-2 defeat against
Arra Rovers in a league tie played in Newtown last Sunday. Rearcross dominated
for long periods in the first half but failed to reflect this dominance on
the scoreboard. Arra Rovers made a dream start when Padraig Hickey's shot
finished in the back of the net seconds into the game. Rearcross got on top
after this with efforts from Emmet Steed and Joey Nolan not far of target
in the 11th and 16th minute respectively. A Brendan Deegan strike from the
edge of the eighteen yard box was superbly saved by the Portroe custodian
in the 19th minute. Rearcross got back on level terms in the 35th minute when
Declan O'Toole's delivery from the end line was knocked to the net by Emmet
Steed at the back post. Rearcross were doomed when Arra Rovers reacted immediately
and regained the lead a minute later when slack defending allowed Anthony
Kennedy to finish to the net from the edge of the six yard box. Rearcross
never recovered from this setback and went further behind early in the second
half when Padraig Hickey flicked the ball to the net with a headed effort
at the near post. Arra Rovers were now showing their superiority and added
a fourth with twenty five minutes remaining when Anthony Kennedy tapped home
on the second attempt in front of goal. Joey Nolan pulled a goal back five
minutes before the end when a finish from out on the right, however this was
too little too late in a game that saw the visitors turn in a dismal display
that seriously dents whatever league title aspirations that may have remained
prior to this journey to Newtown.
