Rearcross 'A' 2 - Cloughjordan 'A' 7

The score line speaks for itself or does it?, Rearcross were well below par with a lacklustre performance against an in form Cloughjordan side who ran out easy winners from this Premier League encounter played at Rearcross F.C. Grounds last Sunday. Rearcross missing a number of regulars on the day will surely regret not reflecting their first half dominance on the scoreboard, alas poor finishing in front of goal was to prove costly as it was Clough who took the lead in the 22nd minute when Willie Darcy got through on goal with relative ease and hit a left legged effort past Ger Kennedy, brief credit to Rearcross who rallied and levelled within a matter of minutes when Emmet Steed took advantage and shot past Darren Killackey from close range. Rearcross slipped backwards after this leveller and were punished accordingly when the Rearcross defence stood waiting for an adjudged offside whistle that never sounded as Kevin Kennedy was given way to much space on the right and crossed to Peter Hennelly who drove to the back of the net from the edge of the six yard box. Rearcross had their chances for the remainder of the half but failed to capitalise and were 2-1 behind at the half way mark as opposed to being well in control. The mood on the day from a Rearcross perspective was typified at that start of the second half as the visitors struck with a two goal blast in space of ninety seconds, the first coming 40 seconds in to the half when sloppiness in the Rearcross back line allowed Willie Darcy in for his second, further disaster was to follow for Rearcross a minute later when Kevin Kennedy made the defence look very pedestrian like as he waltzed through and slotted between the posts. Despite this deficit Rearcross kept battling and pulled a goal back when David O'Toole scored in on 59 minutes, however this had little or no effect as Rearcross conceded a fifth three minutes later when a move on the right flank saw Kevin Kennedy clipped from behind inside the eighteen yard box, Shay Donnelly was in no doubt and pointed to the spot, Willie Darcy stepped up and completed his hat trick with a well struck spot kick, the match was over as contest after this and Cloughjordan tacked on two more goals with Kevin Kennedy getting a second when the ball came back of the crossbar and the man of the match was on hand to knock home from close range. Kevin Quinlan got his name on the scoresheet with ten minutes remaining when he got through a sieve like defence and scored the final goal against a dour Rearcross outfit on the day who will have to regroup after this heavy defeat and the management team will ponder on this food for thought debacle.
