Cloughjordan 'A' 2 - Rearcross 'A' 1
An under strength Rearcross 'A' squad made the journey to Cloughjordan
for this league fixture last Sunday and had to settle for second best on a
2-1 scoreline after the home side turned in a dogged performance to claim
the points. Cloughjordan applied the early pressure, however Rearcross coped
well, a good move in the 6th minute saw John Ryan Luke cross to Emmet Steed
who wasn't far off, a well worked move from the middle of the field saw Rearcross
threaten again four minutes later, this time a well timed tackle averted the
danger for the home side. Rearcross went one behind on fifteen minutes when
poor defensive play allowed Willie Darcy get on the end of a delivery from
the right, the left legged deflected shot finished in the net. The lead should
have been extended two minutes later, however the headed effort from the edge
of the six yard box was wide of the upright. Cloughjordan were dominant for
the remainder of the half as Rearcross battled to keep the score line intact,
then a counter attacking move in the 44th minute saw Matthew Ryan Luke make
space just inside the box, the effort was well struck, however it was to be
a luckless outing for the visitors as the ball was inches wide of the upright.
Rearcross got the second half off to the worst possible start when loose play
in the middle of the field saw the ball squandered in the 1st minute, Willie
Darcey broke on the left and hadn't to be asked twice as he rifled to the
roof of the net from eighteen yards, a headed effort from Joey Nolan in the
53rd minute was inches wide of the Clough woodwork, then a well struck right
footed shot by Joey Nolan three minutes later was saved at the post by the
Cloughjordan custodian. Sean Ryan's corner kick looked dangerous in the 65th
minute, however Dan Darcy did well to get the all-important touch. Rearcross
tried hard to up the tempo, PJ McLoughin's headed flick was on target with
ten minutes remaining, however the keeper was well positioned to tap over
the bar. A Sean Ryan free kick from the outside the box two minutes later
was goal bound, however the Clough keeper who had a fine outing parried to
safety, Rearcross pulled a goal back with a minute remaining when Derek O'Toole
rushed in to knock to the net from close range, however it was too little
to late against a Cloughjordan side who showed a greater hunger on the day.
