Silvermines 0 - Rearcross 'A' 1
Rearcross 'A' progressed in the Tipperary Cup last Sunday by
the narrowest of margins on a one nil score line against a well drilled Silvermines
side in a second round game played at the Silvermines venue, the blustery
conditions weren't conducive to good football, however the visitors adjusted
quicker and were denied in the 9th minute when Joey Nolan's long range strike
thumped off the crossbar, the woodwork was to deprive Rearcross for a second
time four minutes later when Emmet Steed's effort from the edge of the box
ricocheted of the upright, Rearcross were firing on all cylinders at this
stage and took the lead in the 18th minute when Derek O'Toole burst through
on the right and did well to keep his feet as he drove to the net from twelve
yards, a resolute Silvermines side clawed their back and enjoyed their fair
share of possession for the remainder of the half and had a glorious chance
to draw level late in half, however the ball was skewed to the left of the
target. The home side playing with wind advantage in the second half were
by far the more threatening and the Rearcross rearguard had to be on full
alert to weather the storm, a long range shot was on target midway through
the half, however the ball was blocked out for a corner, Silvermines looked
menacing from a succession of corners that followed, claims for a handball
went unheard late in the half and then a goalmouth skirmish saw Rearcross
breathe a sigh of relief as the ball was eventually smothered. Rearcross might
have put the victory beyond doubt with five minutes remaining when Liam Nolan(B)
got through on the left, however the Silvermines keeper got back to gather,
Rearcross held on in the remaining minutes to secure the win that secures
their passage to the last sixteen.
