Fast Food Cup Final
Borroway
Rovers 4 - Rearcross 'B' 1
Borroway Rovers turned in a strong performance at the Greyhound
Stadium last Sunday against Rearcross 'B' to win the Fast Food Cup on a four
goals to one score line, it might have been so different had lady luck shone
for Rearcross in an opening half where Rearcross deserved more than the two
goal deficit that was their lot at the half way stage. Borroway were fast
out of the traps and won a corner and a free kick inside the first ninety
seconds which were ably defended by Rearcross, a goal mouth skirmish two minutes
later saw Rearcross custodian Jim Caplis gather after the ball came off the
post with claims for a handball from Rearcross going unheard. Rearcross were
denied in the fifth minute when Thomas Kennedy sent Nigel Ryan down the left
flank who rifled from a tight angle only see the ball rebound off the upright.
The Thurles side continued to attack and Damien Mullins did well to get a
headed touch on a curling free kick with fifteen minutes gone. Rearcross were
soaking a lot of pressure at the back with Damien Mullins and Tommy Ryan Luke
defending stoutly. Rearcross had claims for a penalty turned down midway through
the half after a Borroway defender appeared to handle inside the area. Rearcross
were well in the game at this stage and again came close on 26 minutes when
Thomas Kennedy released Nigel Ryan on the right with the well struck effort
not far away. Padraig Gleeson threatened for Borroway two minutes later, however
play was called back for an offside infringement, in any case Jim Caplis had
done well to make the save. The woodwork was to deny Rearcross for a second
time when a Liam Ryan delivery from out on the right was pounced on by Thomas
Kennedy with the headed effort saved on to the crossbar by Vincent Loughnane
with 16 minutes remaining in the half. Nigel Ryan then got in a shot a minute
later, however the Borroway Rovers net minder was equal to the effort. Damien
Mullins headed clear from a corner kick in the 34th minute, Borroway were
making a strong finish to the half and Jim Caplis got down to save from the
boot of Kevin O'Dwyer with nine minutes left, then a Wayne Keane shot pulled
left of the Rearcross upright. Rearcross needed to get the half way stage
with score line in tact, however disaster struck with three minutes before
the half time whistle when a cross from the edge of the box was poked to the
net from close range by Keith Moore. Rearcross were in disarray and a David
Keane shot a minute later looked to be goal bound, however Jim Caplis somehow
managed to turn the ball over the cross bar at the expense of a corner, the
save was in vain as the resulting corner kick fell to David Keane who sent
a low hard shot to back of the net from the edge of the eighteen yard box.
Rearcross faced an up hill battle in the second half but created more than
their fair share of chances despite the odds, Liam Ryan broke on the left
seven minutes in, however the resulting strike drifted over the Borroway bar.
Rearcross kept on the offensive and Thomas Kennedy set up Liam Nolan (B) in
the 56th minute with the follow up shot pulling wide of the target, then an
Anthony Ryan free kick in 72nd minute was met by Thomas Kennedy, with the
headed effort not far away from the target. Rearcross were dealt a further
blow with twenty minutes remaining when a move on the left saw the ball crossed
in to the danger area where James Carroll lay in wait before side footing
past a helpless Jim Caplis. Rearcross kept battling but couldn't get the breakthrough
their efforts deserved with Thomas Kennedy and Nigel Ryan coming close, Rearcross
did pull a goal back in the 87th minute when Davy Ryan Luke did well to get
on the end of a Thomas Kennedy delivery before heading to the top corner of
the net, however it was took little too late for a luckless Rearcross side
and Borroway had the last say by restoring their advantage in the 90th minute
when James Carroll grabbed his second of the day when he knocked home from
close range after connecting with a free kick swung in from the right to seal
a convincing victory for the Thurles side. NT&DL Chairman Mike Young presented
the Fast Food Cup to Borroway Rovers captain JJ Gleeson.
