Rearcross
'A' 3 - Blackcastle Utd. 2
Rearcross 'A' won out against Blackcastle 'A' on a 3-2 score
line in this league fixture played at Rearcross FC Grounds last Sunday morning,
Rearcross made a flying start and went ahead in the 4th minute when Paddy
Ryan Luke did the trickery on the right wing before sending a low delivery
across the goalmouth where Liam Ryan volleyed to the back of the net, Nigel
Ryan broke through on goal a minute later with his clipped effort pulling
just wide of the upright. The visitors came back at Rearcross and it took
a timely interception from Derek O'Toole to keep the Rearcross lead intact,
Blackcastle equalised on ten minutes when Sean McCormack was on hand to knock
to the net from inside the six-yard box. Rearcross were in disarray after
this and were fortunate three minutes later when the ball came back off the
upright. Rearcross regained the lead in the 18th minute when Paddy Ryan Luke
headed home after getting on the end of Liam Ryan's free kick. Rearcross threatened
from a corner kick in the 35th minute when the ball was blocked at the back
post, Blackcastle counter attacked and came close with an effort that was
barely wide. Rearcross finished the half on a high when Liam Ryan kept his
cool before slotting with precision to the corner of the net from inside the
eighteen yard box. The home side took up the running in the second half and
were denied six minutes in when Emmet Steed's effort struck the base of the
upright, Blackcastle upped the ante and a well timed tackle from Damien Mullins
averted the danger, Jim Caplis then did well to save a minute later. A well
worked move in the 70th minute nearly proved dividends for Rearcross when
Nigel Ryan sent Liam Ryan down the right flank with Emmet Steed unlucky not
to make contact with the resulting cross. Rearcross were playing with fluency
at this stage and successive shots from Sean Mullins and Nigel Ryan weren't
far away. Blackcastle came back at Rearcross towards the end of the game and
Kevin Mullins made a telling tackle with two minutes remaining, the deficit
was reduced to a minimum in the 90th minute when Cathal Leahy got behind the
Rearcross defence to knock to the back of the net, Rearcross had to endure
an anxious three minutes of injury time which was done in admirable fashion
to ensure the win for the home side.
