Rearcross
Youths 2 - Blackcastle Utd. 3
Rearcross bowed out of the Youths Cup last Saturday in Rearcross with a 3-2
defeat to Blackcastle Youths. Both sides fielded understrength teams, nevertheless
an entertaining game of football was served up with Blackcastle making the
early running forcing successive corner, Rearcross weathered the early storm
and might have gone ahead when a long delivery from Mark Hogan found James
Gough who let fly a thunderbolt which was inches wide of the upright. Rearcross
went ahead in the 32nd minute when Dean Lenihan did the trickery on the end
before teeing up Robert Harrington was rifled to the net with a first time
effort, Greg Kennedy came to the rescue for Rearcross late in the half with
a smart save. Blackcastle got the ideal start to the second half and were
back in the game four minutes after the restart when Cathal Leahy drilled
to the corner of the net following a move on the left. Kieran Devitt denied
the visitors a second with a headed clearance off the line minutes later,
Rearcross took the lead for the second time when good work by Paudie Carey
saw Dean Lenihan breakthrough on goal before steering the ball home from an
acute angle. Blackcastle were back on par again in the 17th minute when a
long range effort from Cathal Scully finished in the net. The game was in
the melting pot after this and it was the Templemore side who progressed to
the final when Cathal Scully scored what proved to be the winner from the
penalty spot with eleven minutes remaining, best of luck to Blackcastle in
the final.
