A combined Rearcross
A & B squad fielded a youthful team in this Kilcommon Festival Tournament
game and qualified for the Final of the competition following a penalty shoot
out against a lively Doon / Donohill side, an action packed first half saw end
to end football with plenty of goal month action, Rearcross came close in the
7th minute when Paul Murphy's shot wasn't far away, Doon were robbed two minutes
later when Alan O'Neill's shot stuck the bottom of the upright, it was then the
turn of Paul Murphy a minute later with a fine effort that thumped of the woodwork.
Paudie Carey came to the rescue for Rearcross in the 14th minute with a superb
save when a looping header that was surely goalbound. James Gough was in the action
midway through the half when he delivered to Joey Nolan who fired just wide of
the target.
Doon made an attacking start to the second half and threatened
heavily on the Rearcross rearguard, however some stern defending negated the threat
with Anthony Ryan and Tommy Ryan Luke to the fore. Robert Harrington then popped
up for Rearcross and forced a fine save out of the Doon custodian, Rearcross were
firing on all cylinders at this stage and Liam Ryan drove to the side netting
minutes later. Paul Murphy had the ball in the Doon net midway through the half,
however the effort was disallowed for offside. Doon made a late rally and Tommy
Ryan Luke was forecd to clear off the line. Joey Nolan's pile driver from a long
range free kick saw the Doon net minder scramble the ball to safety with two minutes
to go. Doon nearly grabbed a late winner with seconds remaining when Alan O'Neill's
effort was inches wide of the upright, Rearcross proved the more clinical in the
penalty shoot-out as Robert Harrington, Joey Nolan, Paul Hogan and Eamon Devitt
were precise with their efforts while Eugene Carew and Pat Ahern were on the mark
for Doon / Donohill
