Rearcross 'A' 2 - Moneygall 3

Rearcross 'A' relinquished their Tipperary Cup title in somewhat disappointing fashion against Moneygall in this floodlit encounter played at Rearcross FC Grounds last Saturday night, the home side will surely rue not converting chances created and were somewhat unlucky with the woodwork also thwarting the defending Cup champions. Rearcross made a promising start and Davy O'Toole raided down the left before winning the corner, the resulting corner was cleared to safety by the visitors. PJ McLoughlin had the ball in the Moneygall net in the 12th minute, however the effort was ruled off side. PJ McLoughlin crossed to Davy O'Toole on 24 minutes whose headed effort was on target, however the Moneygall custodian was able to gather. The outing was proving to be a frustrating for the home side and claims for a penalty went unheard when Emmet Steed was bundled of the ball two minutes later. Rearcross were well on top and a well struck twenty five yard free kick from Kevin Mullins was held by a custodian Philip Larkin in the Moneygall goal. The visitors custodian was in the action again five minutes later after advancing and saving at the feet of Emmet Steed. Rearcross really should really have been in front at this stage and Diarmuid Sheehy advanced through the centre and sent a rasping shot inches wide of the upright. Moneygall counter attacked and Billy McCormack fired on target, however Jim Caplis was equal to the effort. Rearcross finished the half strongly and Davy O'Toole broke on the left and squared to PJ McLoughlin, however the score line remained intact. The woodwork denied Rearcross two minutes before the break when Davy O'Toole's effort stuck the underside of the crossbar. Rearcross were again dominant at the start of the second half and Damien Mullins was unlucky when his low drive skidded just wide of the post, further woe was to follow when Derek O'Toole's inswinging corner came off the outside of the crossbar minutes later. Rearcross paid the ultimate price when Billy Hayes opened the visitors account in the 59th minute with a well struck goal. Rearcross came back at the visitors and PJ McLoughlin's clinical pass from the out on the left found Emmet Steed with the follow up effort just off target, this was followed minutes later with a pile driver from Diarmuid Sheehy which flew over the bar.. Moneygall increased their lead on 77 minutes when the ball broke to Billy Hayes who scrambled the ball to the net, Billy Hayes rounded off his hat-trick two minutes later after poking the ball to the corner of the net from just inside the eighteen yard box. Rearcross rallied despite the deficit and Sean Mullins found space in the middle to turn and knock the ball to the net from twelve yards with three minutes remaining. The home side attacked in droves and Sean Mullins grabbed a second goal two minutes later with a smashing strike that nestled in the corner of the net, Rearcross pushed for an equaliser in the dying minutes, however last season's Cup winners had left it too late on a most frustrating night and will now focus their efforts on the Ricky Fogarty Cup.
