Blackcastle 'B' 2 - Rearcross 'B' 1

Rearcross B concluded their 07/08 season last Sunday afternoon when they travelled to Templemore to face Blackcastle B in their final league game but returned home empty handed after a 2-1 defeat. With the 2nd Division promotion and relegation places already decided, both sides had little to play for and in truth, this was reflected in the quality of the game as both teams struggled to create chances throughout.Rearcross had the advantage of a strong wind in the opening half and had more of the possession with Michael O’Gorman and Liam Ryan looking dangerous in attack. And indeed, the away side took the lead after 20 minutes when a long ball over the top found Liam Ryan in space. He beat the retreating defender and let fly from 20 yards out leaving the Blackcastle custodian with no chance. To their credit, Blackcastle recovered well after this setback and grabbed a deserved equaliser 5 minutes before half time as the visitors failed to clear their lines and were punished. When the ball landed in the six yard box, it was the inrushing Jack Moore who reacted fastest to blast the ball to the roof of the net leaving Eamonn Wade helpless in the Rearcross goal.Blackcastle were a much more dominant side in the second half with Rearcross camped in their own half for long periods. However, despite the concession of a succession of corners, they defended admirably and caused the hosts trouble with quick counterattacks. The deadlock was broken midway through the second half and it was the home side that edged in front with a Cathal Leahy shot from inside the penalty area which nestled neatly in the corner of the net. Rearcross upped their game after this and tried to force an equaliser. Their efforts were met with stiff resistance from the Blackcastle defence and in the end, they went unrewarded as time ran out. This defeat brought to an end a season that, had started with great aspirations following a shield title and a solid start to the league campaign, ultimately will be remembered with disappointment and regret at what might have been.
