Rearcross 'A' 2 - Toomevara 1

Rearcross 'A' progressed to the second round of the Munster Junior Cup with a hard earned 2-1 victory against Toomevara in this floodlit encounter played in Rearcross last Saturday evening, Rearcross made a promising start and a Martin McLoughlin delivery was headed just wide by Eamon Gleeson in the 4th minute. A Derek O'Toole corner was parried away by the Toomevara custodian six minutes later. Nigel Ryan did well to fire on target, however the strike was blocked down by a Toomevara defender on the 30 minute mark. Derek O'Toole was unlucky nine minutes before the break when the ball skewed to the left of the Toomevara upright. Rearcross got a perfect start to the second half when James Gough squared to Nigel Ryan who rammed the ball to the corner of the net for a fine finish inside the 1st minute.. Rearcross controlled affairs for long spells after this and a Simon Kennedy effort wasn't far off the mark on 52 minutes. Rearcross opened up a two nil advantage midway through the second half when Declan O'Toole advanced on the left flank and rifled the ball over the head of the Toomevara custodian. Thomas Sheppard was a threat for Toomevara and a snap shot minutes later was goal bound, however Declan O'Toole cleared off the line.Sean Sheehy came to rescue for Rearcross with two successive saves ten minutes from the end, the first coming as the custodian raced off his line to thwart the visitors, and then the Rearcross keeper did well to behind a Thomas Sheppard effort. Toomevara did pull a goal back in the 89th minute when a Thomas Sheppard free kick slid to the corner of the net. Rearcross survived a late onslaught to book their place in the second round.
