Borroway Rovers 5 - Rearcross 'B' 2
Rearcross 'B' ended 2008 with a disappointing 5-2 away defeat to Borroway Celtic in Thurles last Sunday afternoon. A depleted Rearcross side were on the back foot from the start and conceded the opening goal after 15 minutes when Borroway capitalised on indecision in the Rearcross penalty area to blast the ball home. The visitors fell further behind 5 minutes later when a header from a corner kick somehow managed to creep over the line. Rearcross to their credit upped their game after this and took the game to Borroway with some good passing moves. They were unlucky not to pull a goal back when an excellent ball from Tommy Ryan (L) found Liam Ryan in the Borroway penalty box. However, the striker’s effort glanced the outside of the post and went wide. Another defensive error led to Borroway’s third goal on the half hour mark. Rearcross cut the deficit back to two 10 minutes before the break when Tommy Ryan (L) directed a Brian Sheehy cross past the Borroway keeper, only to be denied by the crossbar. However, Michael O’Gorman was on hand to blast home the rebound to give Rearcross a flicker to hope. However, this flame was soon extinguished when Borroway easily played their way down the wing and into the penalty area to grab a fourth first half goal.
The 2nd half was a scrappy affair as Rearcross struggled to penetrate the Borroway defence while Borroway in turn failed to create many clear cut chances. The game was put beyond all doubt 20 minutes into the second half when the Borroway winger turned his marker without ease and finished to the corner of the net to round off his hat trick. Rearcross did score a consolation goal in the dying minutes when substitute Greg Kennedy did well get on the end of a Liam Ryan cross and finish to the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
