Rearcross 'B' 6 - Latteragh Celtic 1

Rearcross B made an encouraging start to 2009 with a 6 – 1 home victory over Latteragh Celtic under lights last Saturday night. The visitors took an early lead when Billy Corcoran waltzed through the Rearcross rearguard inside the first 5 minutes to go one nil ahead. Rearcross controlled the game after this setback and dominated the possession throughout. Matthew Ryan (L) was first to go close when his chipped effort was inches off target after a quarter of an hour. Rearcross drew level on 20 minutes when Joey Nolan sent a dangerous cross into the Latteragh penalty area and Greg Kennedy forced his way to the front post to grab his second goal in as many games. Rearcross took the lead on the half hour mark when Tommy Ryan (L) played Joey Nolan in behind the Latteragh defence. The striker beat the offside trap and kept his composure to beat the advancing keeper and put his team in front. Latteragh’s best chance of the half came shortly after this and Jim Caplis had to be fast off his line to deny the visitors. The next goal was all important at this stage and it came to Rearcross 5 minutes into the second when Liam Ryan let fly from the edge of the area. His shot took a slight deflection and that was enough to beat the keeper. The game was effectively over as a contest after this and Brian Sheehy added to the score line 10 minutes later. He ran on to an excellent through ball from Joey Nolan and beat the outrushing Latteragh custodian with an excellent finish from 10 yards out. Brian got his second of the day from a corner kick 10 minutes later with a deft finish that looped in over the defender on the line. Latteragh almost drew a goal back when a free kick from the area of the penalty area rattled the Rearcross crossbar and the rebound was cleared safety. Rearcross had a free kick of their own 5 minutes before the end which Adrian Hurley placed in the top corner to add gloss to the score line. Rearcross had further chances late on through Michael O’Gorman and Thomas Kennedy to add to their lead however they had done enough to record a comfortable and well wanted victory.
