Cloughjordan 'B' 4 - Rearcross 'B' 2
Rearcross B made the trip to league leaders Cloughjordan B and returned home disappointed on the wrong end of a 4-2 score line. A gale force wind blowing across the field played havoc throughout the match and the poor underfoot conditions resulting in a scrappy game as both sides struggled to produce any flowing football. The home side were first to settle and took the lead after 10 minutes when a free kick took a fortunate deflection which played the ball in the path of Willier Darcy who didn’t think twice about despatching the ball to the back of the net from 10 yards out. Cloughjordan were well on top at this stage and went further ahead when Rearcross conceded an own goal from a corner kick after 25 minutes. To their credit, Rearcross didn’t drop their heads and gradually began to take control of the game. They deservedly drew a goal 10 minutes before the break from a 25 yard free kick after Brian Sheehy was fouled. Joey Nolan stepped up to curl the ball past the Cloughjordan custodian to halve the deficit.
The next goal was crucial and it came to the home side 5 minutes into the second when the home defence were undone by elements and the two goal advantage was restored once more by Willie Darcy. Again Rearcross didn’t give up and were rewarded midway through the half when a fine flowing move played James Gough into the penalty area where he was upended as he was about to pull the trigger. Liam Ryan stepped up and coolly slotted home the resulting penalty. Rearcross went all out for the equaliser after this and were unlucky not to draw level when both Michael O’Gorman and Simon Kennedy had chances to score. In the end, their effort was all in vain and to add insult to injury the home side caught Rearcross with a quick counter attack to score fourth in the final minute through Adrian Hogan..
