Rearcross 'A' 2 - Cloughjordan 'A' 5

Rearcross 'A' tumbled to a 5-2 defeat in this Premier Division game played at Rearcross FC Grounds on Saturday evening. Rearcross made a sprightly start and were unlucky not to go ahead in the 11th minute when Liam O'Toole slipped the ball through to Nigel Ryan who let fly, however Shane Williams in the Cloughgordan goal parried the ball on to the upright and up for a corner. Adrian Hurley's inswinging corner looked dangerous, however ball was knocked wide of the target. Rearcross keeper Sean Sheehy was in the action four minutes later with a smart body save. Cloughjordan were starting to get a foothold and Benny Costello got too much time to steady before drilling just right of the upright. The visitors looked to be in for a goal on the twenty minute mark, however play was called back for an offside infringement. Rearcross counter attacked and Liam Ryan was denied with a well struck shot. Rearcross went behind in the 26th minute when an offside call was ill timed and Sean Sheehy did exceptionally well to block the first attempt, however Wesley Hayes was on hand to put the ball over the line second time round. Rearcross had a chance to get back on par within seconds when Declan O'Toole took up a good position in front of goal, however the effort was inches over. Cloughjodan went two nil up eleven minutes before the break when Rearcross lost possession coming out of defence and Benny Costello didn't have to be asked twice with a well taken goal.

Rearcross might have got the start they needed in the second half when the first attack of the half saw James Gough find space on the right to unleash a smashing left legged effort which was parried on to the crossbar with claims from Rearcross that the ball was over the line, however play was waved on. Further woe was to follow two minutes later with John Ryan Luke was unlucky to see his attempted clearance whiz to the top corner of Sean Sheehy's net. Rearcross kept battling and a Nigel Ryan back header shaved the woodwork minutes later. Sean Sheehy was in the action again woth a fine save on 73 minutes. Rearcross pulled a goal back with fifteen minutes remaining when Andy Murphy kept cooled before blasting to the roof of the net from an acute angle. Rearcross reduced the deficit to a minimun four minutes later when Andy Murphy was the provider on the left, the ball broke to the Liam Ryan who rammed home from in front of goal. Rearcross pushed forward looking for an equaliser, however it was Cloughjordan who extended their lead seven minutes from time when Benny Costello got up to head home from a corner kick. The result was put beyond doubt in the 89th minute when John Hayes got behind the Rearcross defence to slip the ball between the posts to give Cloughjordan a comprehensive victory on the day.
