Nenagh AFC 'A' 2 - Rearcross 'A' 0

Rearcross A suffered a two nil defeat to high flying Nenagh A in Brickfields on Sunday last. The first half proved a tight affair with both teams enjoying a fair share of possession. Chances were few and far between, however, as both sides remained solid in defence and luckless in attack. As the first half drew to a close the home side began to assert their dominance and it took a mixture of good defending and high midfield work rate to keep the scores level. During this period of dominance the Rearcross attack, led by Liam Ryan (R) and Tommy Kennedy, were unlucky not to secure a priceless goal for the away side after almost capitalising on a number of counter attacks. Just as the half drew to a close, however, Nenagh struck gold when a well worked move in the left midfield area found a hole in the Rearcross defence. The opportunity was taken with aplomb by who Adam Hannon who smashed a first time shot past helpless Rearcross keeper Sean Sheehy after an impressive and somewhat intricate passing move. The home side, buoyed by their goal before the break, took considerably more control of the game in the second half and passed the ball with confidence and style. Rearcross did not throw in the towel, however, and tried their luck from distance on a number of occasions. Alas, the writing was on the wall for Rearcross a number of minutes later when a move down the right hand side resulted in a swinging cross which floated midway between the visitors’ six yard box and penalty spot. Sean Sheehy and Tommy Ryan (L) were both quickly aware to the danger, yet their valiant attempt at clearing the ball was thwarted by Nenagh’s Trevor Morrissey duly dispatched the ball to the net after unexpectedly finding it at his feet after a lucky break. It was one way traffic after this as Nenagh piled on the pressure and were unlucky not to bag a third after hitting the post and crossbar on a no less than four occasions. Rearcross, to their credit, worked hard until the final whistle and never gave in, with the midfield area, Davy O’ Toole especially, putting in a trojan amount of effort. Well done also to Tommy Kennedy who faired very well on his debut for Rearcross A and was unlucky not to bag a goal for himself.
