Rearcross 'A' 0 - Borrisoleigh 2

Courage is the discovery that you may not win, and trying when you know you can lose.” – Tom Krause

Rearcross played host to Borrisoleigh under lights on Saturday last and ended up on the wrong side of a two nil defeat. The game began at a sluggish pace but eventually sprang into life in the sixth minute when Eamon Gleeson found himself one on one with the Borrisoleigh shot stopper Gerry Treacy who in turn superbly parried Gleeson’s shot wide of the post. Borrisoleigh eased themselves into the game after this and duly took the lead with eleven minutes gone, a cross from the left met on the head by Benny Harkin and suddenly the home side faced an uphill battle. The remainder of the half was a ding dong affair with Borrisoleigh shading both possession and territory, a snap shot from Simon Kennedy in the 43rd minute being Rearcross’ only clear attempt on goal – alas, goalkeeper Gerry Treacy came to the away side’s rescue once more. Rearcross came out of the traps all guns blazing in the second half and were unlucky not to draw level after a superb reflex save from the evergreen Treacy denied Eamon Gleeson’s left footed strike from finding the net.  A subsequent Derek O’ Toole corner kick with twenty minutes to go was met by the head of Simon Kennedy, the centre half’s glancing header shaving the woodwork on this occasion. In the 86th minute a Paul Murphy volley looked destined for the net only for Rearcross to be denied, not for the first (or second, third or fourth!) time, by the exceptional Treacy in between the posts. With a minute remaining on the clock an interception in midfield created a one on one opportunity for Borrisoleigh’s Benny Harkin who slotted the ball home with precision after making a darting run through the centre. Two nil and the game looked all but over. Rearcross to their credit battled on after this and scored a minute later via the head of Simon Kennedy only for play to be brought back for a pushing infringement. The game finished three minutes later, leaving the boys in green and white somewhat deflated but already looking forward to their next league game knowing they are capable of mixing it with any team in the league. Man of the match on this occasion goes to former League of Ireland and current Borrisoleigh goalkeeper Gerry Treacy.
