Nenagh Celtic 'A' 7 - Rearcross 'A' 2

A very much depleted Rearcross 'A' outfit were the visitors to Nenagh VEC for this Ricky Fogarty Cup tie against Nenagh Celtic 'A' and eventually succumbed to defeat following a somewhat controversial encounter that saw the winners awarded a total of three penalties which were duly converted with copycat efforts from Darren Mitchell. Rearcross were forced to field with a bare and aging eleven on this occasion, however this didn't detract from a highly competitive opening half. The home side edged ahead when Nenagh Celtic were awarded their first penalty of the tie which was dispatched by Darren Mitchell. Rearcross regrouped and got back level when Eamon Gleeson dashed through on the right flank before finishing superbly across the goal line from a tight angle. The home side were unsettled after this unexpected equaliser and Rearcross might have taken the lead five minutes later when the ball broke to Ger Kennedy who dragged the ball wide of the upright from the edge of the box. Rearcross were enjoying more than their fair share of possession and were denied when Liam Ryan was taken down inside the box, however the outcome was a free kick despite strong protestations from the visiting side. Nenagh Celtic took a 2-1 lead to the break after Mark McKenna pushed forward and prodded between the posts from in front of goal. Rearcross made a strong start to the second half and got back level when Eamon O'Toole rammed to the net at the back post following a corner kick. It was proving to be a most difficult outing for the visitors when the referee pointed to the spot two minutes later to give Nenagh Celtic the opportunity to restore their lead and Darren Mitchell made no mistake with the resulting penalty. Rearcross still didn't throw in the towel despite the odd's and had their chances to further extend their tally, however Nenagh Celtic had the wind at their backs and went 4-2 ahead when Darren Mitchell scored his third of the day again from the spot. Nenagh Celtic went on to score a further three goals in the remaining minutes through Brendan Sheehan, Brian Quinn and Noel Tucker against a Rearcross side that realised it was a case of mission impossible on this occasion.
