Thurles Town 3 - Rearcross 'A' 1

Rearcross 'A' were away to league leaders Thurles Town in a league encounter on Sunday last played at the Greyhound Stadium in Thurles. Rearcross, fresh off the back of a good win against Nenagh Celtic, came out with all guns blazing and were very unlucky not to go ahead after Robert Harrington turned his man before sending a shot crashing off the crossbar from the edge of the box. Rearcross were denied 3 minutes later by the same piece of the woodwork when Liam Ryan send in a thunderbolt which thumped off the crossbar and down on to the line before it was cleared away to safety. Thurles Town came to life after these two let offs and took the lead in the 20th minute when the ball took a deflection of the Rearcross defender and landed in the path of the onrushing Thurles midfielder who finished smartly to the net. Thurles doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when the attacker got free inside the box and send the ball past the Rearcross netminder. It was tit for tat after this and the sides went into the half time break with the score at 2 0 to the home side. Rearcross started the 2nd half the same as the first and were rewarded when Diarmaid Sheehy got in front of the Thurles keeper and finished from Derek O'Toole's corner. Rearcross's tails were up now and some good attacking play from Kieran Devitt saw the attacker beat 1 defender before laying off to Robert Harrington but the Thurles goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to get the ball to safety. Eamonn Devitt went close in the 73rd minute with a good shot that was gathered by the Thurles custodian. Rearcross had another few half chances before the end but couldn't take advantage of their possession. Thurles made them pay the price when they won and converted a dubious penalty with 13 minutes to play. Eamonn O'Toole made two good saves late on for Rearcross to deny Thurles. Rearcross played well and can take heart from their performance. They will need more performance like this if they are to avoid the drop at the end of the season.
