Rearcross Youths 1 - Clodiagh Rangers 3

Rearcross Youths turned a commendable performance before going under to a lively Clodiagh Rangers combination in this floodlit Shield game played in Rearcross on Monday evening. The visitors made the brighter start with the home sides defensive pairing of William Mackey and Kevin Mulcahy to the fore in the early exchanges. Rearcross worked their way in to the game and Gary O'Brien's in-swinging corner kick threatened but was held by Clodiagh custodian Gavin Ryan on the fifteen minute mark. A lively Aidan Moloney shot wide of the Clodiagh upright two minutes later. Aidan Moloney was in the action again on 20 minutes, however the keeper was positioned to save. William Mackey came to the rescue with good defending minutes later. Rearcross did have the ball in the net in the 25th minute, however play was called back for an offside infringement. The visitors went ahead on the half hour mark when poor defensive play saw Rearcross conceding a penalty which was duly converted by Ger Grant. A flowing move through the centre two minutes later saw Brian Carey release Aidan Moloney, however the Rearcross number 10 was adjudged to have been in an off side position. Brendan Larkin drilled wide of the Rearcross upright from close range nine minutes before the break which was a let off for the home side. Rearcross made the pefect start to the second half when Darragh Kennedy released Aidan Moloney who paced through on goal only to be upended inside the box. Aidan Moloney picked himself up and shimmied before sending the ball to the corner of the net from the spot. It was end to end at this stage, Darragh Kennedy's low drive finished in the Clodiagh side netting on the hour mark. Rearcross were dominant at this stage and a good effort from Darragh McGrath flew over the bar. Brian Carey's shot was held by the Clodiagh keeper and then Kevin Mulcahy did well to track back to avert the danger at the expense of a corner kick. The Drombane side looked to have taken a fortituous lead when the ball bobbled on the goal line, however play continued after a brief interruption. Clodiagh Rangers took the lead for a second time in convincing fashion on 67 minutes when a pin point delivery from Brendan Larkin released Robert Murphy on the right who finished superbly to the roof of the net from the edge of the eighteen yard box. Rearcross were dealt a succour blow a minute later when Robert Murphy again did the damage after breaking through the centre to rifle past Darragh Ryan Luke from close range. Rearcross kept plugging despite the deficit and Luke McKenna forced the Clodiagh custodian to parry. Rearcross battled gallantly to the end, however Robert Murphy's double hit in the space of a minute proved the difference on the day, best of luck to Clodiagh Rangers in the remainder of the competition.
