Moneygall 'A' 4 - Rearcross 1

Rearcross played out their last league game of the season in Moneygall on Sunday last and came away on the losing end of a four goals to one scoreline. Moneygall got off to the perfect start in the 3rd minute when Billy McCormack’s long range shot was tipped over, David Gleeson scoring from the resulting corner kick with a fine strike from six yards. Rearcross almost replied soon after when Darren Quigley was fouled out on the right, the resulting free from Greg Kennedy just wide. Liam O’ Toole then broke away in the 12th minute and squared to Liam Ryan (R), whose shot from nine yards was not up to scratch on this occasion. Liam Ryan came close again two minutes later when his audacious chip dipped just over the bar after good work by Liam O’ TOole and the Ryan (L) brothers, Tommy and Matthew. Moneygall doubled their scoring in the 25th minute when a great strike by Aodhan Ryan went flying into the net from distance, with Rearcross pulling a goal back five minutes later when a superb left footed volley by Greg Kennedy from outside the box rattled the bar with Kieran Devitt on hand to nod home the rebound. Liam Ryan’s shooting boots tried to grab the equalizer in the 35th minute but his effort from six yards, after good play by Kieran Devitt on the right, proved too tame. Rearcross were pushing hard and motoring well by now and Matthew Ryan (L) was next to come close less than two minutes later when his deflected shot was saved expertly by the Moneygall custodian. Liam O’ Toole was last to shoot for the visitors in the first half when his superb volley from outside the box was well saved with two minutes remaining in the half. The second half proved a scrappy affair with fewer chances with the home side scoring a third through the boot of Tadgh Kennedy in the 55th minute and then shutting up shop and convincingly closing out the game. Rearcross tried in vain to battle a way back into the game, throwing experienced campaigners Diarmuid Sheehy and Mark Hogan into the fray, yet it was not to be and Moneygall wrapped up the points in the 74th minute when John Kennedy’s fine goal saw off the challenge of the boys in green and white. Rearcross now turn their attention to the semi final of the Barry Cup where they will play the winners of BT Harps B and Thurles Celtic.
