Lough Derg 'A' 3 - Rearcross 'A' 1

A scant twelve man Rearcross A squad made the journey to Killaloe to take on fellow league rivals Lough Derg on Sunday last and came away on the wrong side of a two goal defeat despite producing a spirited performance. Rearcross indeed got off to the better start with a corner, Simon Kennedy shot and Mark Hogan free kick all taking place within the first ten minutes. Just as Rearcross looked likely to strike the visitors went up the other end and scored when a long delivery was headed across the box and, with several defenders losing their footing, knocked home by Dermot McCarthy. Lough Derg could have doubled their lead in the 21st minute but their shot hit the side netting, a goal which would have been unfair to the visitors who were playing well. Rea got their deserved equaliser with ten to go in the first half when Kieran Devitt’s excellent delivery out on the left was met by Simon Kennedy who leapt in the air like a salmon to head home. Rearcross came out all guns blazing in the second half and put in a number of excellent hard hitting challenges yet it was not to be as Dermot McCarthy went on to score of his second of the day with 51 minutes on the clock and the game was now taking a turn in Lough Derg’s favour, especially when taking into account two fabulous saves made by Jim Caplis in the Rearcross goals in the following minutes. Rearcross did battle hard after this but what the players had in effort could not be matched with quality on this occasion and alas the visitors could not find the goal they were looking for despite Davy O’ Toole, Darragh Kennedy and Simon Kennedy coming close with shots in the 55th, 58th and 60th minutes respectively. Kieran Devitt was also making a menace of himself in the Rearcross attack and came close with a number of chances between the 65 and 75 minute mark before Lough Derg all but sealed the game with ten minutes remaining when a defensive lapse allowed Christy Monaghan to waltz through on goal and slot home his team’s third of the day.
