Rearcross 'A' 2 - Portumna 5
Rearcross welcomed league leaders Portumna to town on Friday night knowing that anything less than a victory would end their hopes of lifting the Division 1 league title this year. The game started at a helter skelter pace and it was the home side who took the lead on 20 minutes when great work from Michael O Gorman and Kieran Devitt down the right wing saw Devitt turn his man inside the box before sending a perfectly weighted cross to Greg Kennedy who made no mistake powering his header past the Portumna keeper. Portumna upped their game after this and it took some excellent defending from the home side to keep them at bay. It was 1 all in the 38th minute when some terrible marking from Rearcross saw the Portumna centre half rise highest from a confer to finish to the net and that's the way the game remained at half time. Rearcross started the second half the way that they had hoped not to. Portumna caught Rearcross napping from another corner. With the corner played short, it was swung into the box and finished scrapping by the Portumna attacker. Rea to their credit kept battling and were level again in the 70th minute. Michael O Gorman picked up the ball on the left and seeing the goalkeeper moving to his right sent a whizzing daisy cutter to the bottom left hand corner catching the keeper out. It could've been 3 2 to Rea 5 minutes later wen Kieran Devitt played O Gorman through only to see his shot well saved by the keeper. Rea were dealt a major sucker blow with 13 minutes left when a shot from 35 yards out took an awful bounce in front of Jim Caplis in the rea goal and ended up in the net with the keeper left helpless in the goals. Portumna tacked on 2 more goals in the last 3 minutes to leave a very unfair complexion on the score line. Rearcross,s attention now turns to the promotion chase and the 2 cup competitions.
