Rearcross 'A' 1 - Borroway Rovers 0

Both teams entered this first game of 2017, hoping to build on what had been a successful start to the league.  Borroway Rovers were hoping to keep their title challenges alive and avenge their defeat to the Rearcross side in the Cup before Christmas. The Thurles side began brightly and took the game to the home team, creating numerous half chances in the opening 20 minutes of the game. The game was a tight affair with little clear cut chances. Rearcross were unlucky not to have taken the lead when Liam Ryan’s expertly struck, left footed, half volley rattled the Borroway goal post right on half time.  Borroway will feel they should have taken the lead following the break with numerous chances just going wide. Were it not for some fine goalkeeping from Rearcross’s number 1 Jim Caplis, the Thurles side could have put the game to bed. However Rearcross showed fantastic character and hung on. The Rea boys were rewarded when the ball was slipped through for Mike O’Gorman who touched the ball pass the advancing keeper and finished the ball brilliantly into the net.  Borroway piled men forward in the hope of an equaliser and got their chance when the referee rewarded them a penalty with only 15 minutes to go. However not for the first time this season Jim Caplis was equal to the effort. Rearcross could have doubled their led when Liam Ryan’s cheeky chip from outside the box was just tipped over by the away keeper. Rearcross dug in and despite missing  key first team players rose to the occasion and took all three points. Rearcross will be looking to build from this and drive on into 2017. The club would like to also wish Borroway Rovers the very best for 2017 and the reminder of the season
