The NTSL U-13’s Kennedy Cup team lost out to a lively Limerick County Schoolboys League selection at Rearcross FC Grounds on a two nil score line in what was an entertaining affair. The Limerick side did the early attacking with Ed Valedke very much to the fore, the number nine waltzed through on the left in the 4th minute before blasting over with a well struck shot. Ed Valedke was in the action again five minutes later with a low drive that saw NTSL custodian Eoin Brophy make a fine reflex save at the near post. The North Tipperary side started to come in to the game and Jack Skehan forced a corner kick with a well struck shot that was deflected over the end line. Patrick Deegan did well to break through on goal in the 19th minute; however the green & whites closed in to avert the danger. NTSL’s Kevin Hassett fired on target three minutes later, however Cian O’Grady was well positioned to gather. Limerick County’s Ed Valedke was proving a handful and threatened again on the half hour mark, however Brian Carey and Liam Ryan combined well to quell the attack. The Limerick net minder came to the rescue ten minutes before the break when Patrick Deegan raced through on the left, however Cian O’Grady did well to narrow the angle before making the save.
The NTSL used this friendly fixture as an opportunity to try out all panellists and made a number of changes at the half time break which gave the visitors somewhat of an advantage. Ed Valedke looked to have opened the scoring eleven minutes after the restart; however keeper Eric Fanning reacted superbly to push the ball outside the upright. Limerick County were starting to gain a foothold and Luke Bolger was denied with a well struck effort that thumped of the crossbar in the 54th minute. There was to be no further reprieve for the North Tipp side as Dylan Young was in space inside the box a minute later and made no mistake with a well dispatched effort that nestled in the back of the net. The NTSL side kept plugging and strung several good passing movements together but couldn’t get the elusive breakthrough their efforts deserved. The LCSL doubled their advantage five minutes from time when Jack Barry collected the ball outside the box before driving between the posts. Paul Walsh was luckless not to pull a goal back for North Tipperary two minutes later with a volleyed effort that was inches away. All in all, this well contested game was a good work for both squads as part of their Kennedy Cup preparations with the Limerick side just about deserving the win on the day.
