Rearcross
'A' 1 - Glengoole Utd. 3
Rearcross
'A' turned in a below par performance last Sunday in the FAI Junior Cup and succumbed
to a lively Glengoole Utd. on a three goals to one score line, Rearcross missing
some key players at the onset were dealt a further blows when two of the starting
eleven had to retire injured in the first half, however all in all the display
on the day wasn't up to the mark. The opening exchanges were evenly shared and
Sean Sheehy had to be alert to save in the 4th minute. Rearcross broke on right
in the 13th minute and a nasty eye injury saw Declan O'Toole retiring to the bench.
Rearcross had their chances after this and a Nigel Ryan shot was saved by the
visiting keeper in the 24th minute, Rearcross took the lead in two minutes later
with a smashing long range effort from Nigel Ryan after good play from Eamon Devitt.
Glengoole came in to the game towards the end of the half and Stuart Hanrahan's
floated effort in the 28th minute wasn't far away. An injury to Emmet Steed in
the 36th minute forced Rearcross to reorganise and poor defending saw Rearcross
hand the initiative to Glengoole with the concession of two goals before the half
time whistle with the first coming in the 39th minute when Sean Sheehy parried
and it was Stuart Hanrahan who reacted to poke the ball to the corner of the net,
and then with a minute to go, a ball through the centre was not attacked with
conviction and Shane Hanrahan punished the indecision after slipping the ball
between the posts. Rearcross made a promising start to the second half and PJ
McLoughlin found space to shoot, however the effort flew just wide of the upright,
Glengoole went 3-1 ahead on 50 minutes when Rearcross squandered possession in
the middle of the field, Kevin Kenny raced down the right flank and drove to the
corner of the net, Sean Sheehy came to the rescue three minutes later with a fine
save. Rearcross failed to produce the performance required to haul back the deficit
for the remainder of the game, Diarmuid Sheehy did clip the the visitors crossbar
late in the game, however it mattered little in any event as Glengoole had already
done enough to secure their passage to the second round of the competition.
