Holycross 'A' 2 - Rearcross 'A' 1

Rearcross travelled to Holycross to play this league encounter last Sunday morning. Rearcross may have been viewed as underdogs but this was not evident as events unfolded. Rearcross started off on the front foot when Michael O Gorman linked up with Derek O Toole who in turn set up an opportunity for Declan O Toole. This effort was well saved on this occasion. Robbert Harrington had an effort blocked in the 16th minute after good build up play from the Rearcross midfield. Holycross started to find their feet and were awarded a free kick in the 26th minute. The Rearcross FC defensive wall stood firm and cleared well. Minutes later Holycross were in the ascendancy again and won a free kick 20 yards from goal. Greg Kennedy in the Rearcross net managed to turn the free kick past the post. Shortly after the restart Rearcross found themselves 1-0 down. Greg Kennedy saved well following a Holycross corner but the ball was plyed back in towards the danger area. A goal mouth scramble ensued and the ball ended up looping into the Rearcross net. Rearcross could have been 2-0 down after 50 minutes but for good defensive play from John Ryan who got in a last ditch tackle to take the sting out of a close range effort. Kennedy managed to stick out a leg and make enough contact to stop the deflected effort from crossing the line. Great work from Michael O Gorman in the 55th minute saw the ball fall to Eamonn Devitt who sent a sweetly struck half volley to the corner of the Holycross net. Tommy Ryan was called into action to produce a fine block in the 60th minute. 10 minutes later and Michael O Gorman held off a Holycross defender to bend a shot which crept inches past the post. Ten minutes to go and Holycross found a way through the Rearcross rearguard. A Holycross corner ended up bouncing around the six yard box before being prodded home by an outstretched Hollycross toe. On 83 minutes Greg Kennedy came off his line to clear a goal chance from a Holycross counter attack. Rearcross will feel hard done by as this was a game that one point, if not all three, could have been snatched.
