Killenaule Rovers 1 - Rearcross 'A' 2

Rearcross made the journey to Moyglass on Saturday evening for this floodlit FAI Junior Cup game against Killenaule Rovers and emerged victorious by the odd goal in three following an entertaining encounter. Indeed, the result was a copycat scoreline of an FAI Junior Cup tie against the TSDL side which took place in Bilboa 25 years ago. The opening exchanges were evenly contested as Rearcross custodian Sean Sheehy was fast of his line to save on the edge of the box with just three minutes gone. Michael O’Gorman was in the action for Rearcross three minutes later after forcing a good block out of Paul Cooke in the Killenaule goals. Robert Harrington was next up for the visitors with a headed effort from a Greg Kennedy which wasn’t far away. The move of the game came on 16 minutes when fine play on the left culminated with Liam Ryan advancing on the left, however the Killenaule keeper was fast of his line to quell the danger. The NT&DL side hit the front a minute later when Liam Ryan’s delivery from out on the right was taken down by Michael O’Gorman before rifling low to the back of the net. Declan O’Toole linked up with Michael O’Gorman eleven minutes before the break who in turn squared across the face of the goal, however the chance went a begging. The home side showed greater intent after the break but were denied with two top drawer saves by Sean Sheehy who acrobatically touched the ball away twice in as many minutes inside the opening five minutes of the half. Both sets of defences were on top after this, however Killenaule were back level midway through the half when Michael Doyle tumbled inside the box before stepping up to convert with aplomb. Rearcross were back in front within three minutes thanks to a fortuitous goal when the ball finished in the net against the run of play. Killenaule pushed hard to get back on par after this but Rearcross held firm to hold out for a hard earned win. For the record, Noel Deegan was the Rearcross marksman 25 years ago with a brace of goals. Our thanks to Killenaule Rovers for accommodating the Saturday evening fixture and the post-match hospitality.
