Rearcross U-16's 2 - Birdhill 1
Rearcross 16's were at home to Birdhill last Saturday in a lively league
encounter that saw both sides reduced to ten men before Rearcrosss eventually
shaded the issue by the odd goal in three. The early possession was evenly
shared, however it was Dean Lenihan who gave Rearcross the lead on thirteen
minutes with a volleyed strike from ten yards that went straight to the
net. The Birdhill custodian denied the home side in the 27th minute after
Jamie Ryan crossed from the left and found Dean Lenihan whose bicycle kick
effort brought a smashing save out of the Birdhill custodian. Rearcross
made a dominant start to the second half and increased their lead ten minutes
in when Dean Lenihan latched on to a rebound and drove between the posts.
A resilient Birdhill kept the pressure on and were back in the game in the
57th minute when Barry McGuire was well positioned to knock the ball over
the goal line. The home side came close five minutes later when Paul Hogan
advanced on the right and let fly with a pile driver that wasn't far off
the mark. Rearcross looked to be in trouble in the 72nd minute when a good
move on the right saw the visitors get in to a threatening position, however
Tom Hickey snuffed out the danger with a well time tackle before clearing
to safety, Rearcross just about held on to secure a hard earned victory.
