Birdhill U-14's were the visitors to Rearcross last Saturday
and came away with a hard earned 1-0 victory. Good football was hard to come
by in the first half as the blustery conditions did no favours for either
team. The first half was an evenly balanced match with Rearcross matching
their opponents in every part of the field. Tommy Kennedy and Colm Nolan were
battling hard up front while the midfield was being well marshalled by the
impressive Shane Lenihan. Rearcross created a number of half chances before
the break, with Marc Murphy trying his luck on two occasions from outside
the box but to no avail. The second half continued in the same manner as the
first with Rearcross applying the pressure as the half progressed. Birdhill
broke on a counter attack with 15 minutes remaining, however Brendan Shanahan
thwarted the danger. Another quick break by Birdhill resulted in the game's
only goal, a fine Patrick Floyd strike from outside the box ending up in the
bottom corner of the Rearcross net. Rearcross played out the last 10 minutes
in the opposition team's half, however it was not to be. Best for Rearcross
were Shane Lenihan, Sean Hickey, and Greg Kennedy.
