Away league defeat for Rearcross 'B'

Rearcross ‘B’ made the short journey to Birdhill for their 2nd game of the season. Conditions were near perfect for this Sunday morning clash. Both teams made a good start to the game with both sets of midfielders trying to gain the upper hand. The 1st chance of the game fell the way of Rearcross. Some good play down the left flank from Eamon Devitt and Colm Carey, saw Colm Carey swing in a cross which was met by the head of Rob Harrington but his effort went past the post. Birdhill took the lead on the 20th minute which was a frustrating goal for the away side to concede. A quick throw to Charlie Tobin who beat his marker and got to the end line, he crossed the ball into the box to the unmarked Brian Tobin whose flicked header went into the top corner of the net. Rea found themselves 2 nil down 10 minutes later from a corner kick. A mix up the Rea defense saw the unmarked Sean McHugo flick his header goalwards which was initially kept out but the rebound fell to Sean McHugo again and he finished to the net. Not a goal anyone from Rea will want to see again. Rea did finish the half strong and thought they had a goal back when Paul Carey rose highest from a corner but his header flashed over the bar.
After a few stern words from the management at halftime, it seemed to spur Rea into life as they had a good spell for the opening 15 minutes of the 2nd half. They had numerous corners and free kicks from out wide but couldn't make their dominance count. Patrick Ryan had the best effort when he unleashed a rocket from 20 yards out but it flew just past the post. Both sides emptied their benches to good effect and it was Birdhill who nearly made it 3 nil only for Eamon Wade to knock the ball onto the post when it seemed destined for the net. There was one final chance for Rearcross when Gary Ryan played Oisin Kelly in one on one with the keeper only to see his goalbound effort saved. Another hard defeat for Rea to take, as on another day they could have got something from the match.
