Rearcross U-14 Girls put up brave display before losing to Lough Derg

Rearcross Girls U14's hosted their Lough Derg counterparts in this Thurs evening league fixture at Rearcross FC Grounds. This was a very evenly contested game, with Rearcross attacking the Lough Derg rearguard from the start and having the early efforts on goal through Kate Kennedy and Zofia Wieciensika. Lough Derg played their part in a see saw battle but the Rearcross rearguard of Lauren Hartnett, Aoibheann Devitt and Shauna Carr repelled many Lough Derg attacks and counter attacked swiftly with the hard-working midfield of Zofia Kwiecinska, Zara Maher, Chloe Quinlan and Orlaith Carr who moved the ball forward quickly and were duly rewarded 10 minutes before half time through a good finish from Zofia Kwiecinska. Rearcross started the second half 1 nil up but after incessant Lough Derg pressure, they scored 2 quick fire goals in 5 minutes to turn the game on its head. From here Lough Derg piled on the pressure but the excellent work rate from all our players and some great defending by Aoibheann Devitt and Lauren Hartnett, Shauna Carr, and our young goalkeeper Ewa Kwiecinska, kept us in touch, searching for the equaliser, however with 10 minutes to go the Rearcross defence was breached finally and Lough Derg emerged with all the points. A really competitive fixture, with nothing between the sides and again ,12 of our squad is underage at this level again next year.
Well done to Lough Derg on a very sporting game, which gives great encouragement to our Girls, who were fiercely competitive throughout and we look forward to the return fixture.
