Rearcross Ladies conclude blitz series with gallant displays in Newport

Rearcross FC Ladies Team took part in the Final instalment of the Winter Blitz Series which was held this afternoon in Newport Town AFC grounds. Rearcross had 12 players line out during the course of the 5 a side tournament which in itself is a great achievement for the newly formed outfit.

Rearcross FC Ladies took on Newport in the first fixture and were courageous in their approach. RFC had half a dozen great chances and would have bagged a number of goals only for a number of top drawer saves from the Newport Town goaltender. Clodagh Sheldon came closest for Rea with two well struck efforts.

Rearcross put up a great fight against eventual tournament winners Holycross in the next fixture. The Rearcross Ladies defended gallantly while also creating a few chances themselves.

The third fixture proved to be the highlight of the day. Rearcross Ladies recorded their first ever victory this afternoon defeating a Moneygall outfit 1-0. Denise Kennedy scored for the Rea Ladies with a low driven strike from an acute angle, much to the delight of the travelling RFC supporters.

The Rea Ladies took on eventual finalists Killavilla in their fourth game. Overwhelming favourites Killavilla proved too strong for Rearcross who to their credit never lacked in effort or enthusiasm.

Rearcross FC made their way to the Shield Semi Final of the tournament but eventually bowed out of the competition after a hard-fought battle with Moneygall FC. A single goal being decisive.

Rearcross FC Ladies would like to thank a number of people involved in the running of the Winter Blitz Competition.

Credit to Newport Town AFC and BT Harps FC for making their grounds available over the Winter period. Rearcross FC Ladies would also like to thank Thomas Dwan for taking the time to organise and co-ordinate the events.

Thanks to Kennedy's Bar and Shop for providing hot food after our Blitz today for the Ladies. It was well deserved after they put in a great effort with Training and Matches over the last few months.

All of the players on the Rearcross FC Ladies panel can be proud of their maiden voyage into the sporting world and hopefully will don the green and white of Rearcross again in the near future.

Rearcross Panel: Clodagh Sheldon, Denise Kennedy, Laura Deegan, Sarah Kennedy, Mary Guidera, Eve Wade, Lisa Lenihan, Kasia Kwiecinska, Noreen Devitt, Susan Hartnett, Jayne Ronayne, Maria Nolan
