Well done to Rearcross ‘A’ on merited 5-2 win over Lough Derg in the 4th round of the Munster Junior Cup to earn a place in the last 32 with a tough away draw to Cork kingpins Carrigaline United. Best of luck to all in what will only be the 2nd time in the Club’s history that Rea have progressed to the 5th round with the previous outing in 2007 going down to a dramatic penalty shootout where Abbeyfeale United emerged victorious on a 10-9 scoreline.

11th July 2021
11th July 1966
England kicked off the 1966 World Cup with a nil all draw against Uruguay at Wembley Stadium.

The following Club history extract is courtesy of Johnny Gleeson, a stalwart and soccer pioneer in Rearcross and indeed the Slieve Felim region in the seventies and eighties. The Club is indebted to Johnny for his insightful work and effort, sometimes against the odds especially in the early days.

“We can now look back with some amusement on the early years of soccer in Rearcross, though at the time those events were anything but amusing. Until Radio Teilifis Eireann (RTE) television began broadcasting in 1961 it is safe to say nobody in Rearcross had any interest in, or knowledge of the game. Few would have seen it played, especially at a higher level, except for emigrants across the water or those living in Dublin. Following R.T.E.’s opening, occasional brief footages from the English and Scottish leagues were screened. Local youngsters who took more than a passing interest in Association Football after witnessing, albeit briefly, the sports top exponents and teams, and accompanying atmosphere on T.V., would regularly tune in to BBC Radio on Saturday afternoons from 1963 onwards, when the second half of a prominent fixture would be broadcast live. Those years, from 1963 to 1970, marked local youngster’s introduction to names such as George Best, Johnny Giles, Billy Bremer, Geoff Hurst, Norman Hunter, Shay Brennan & Tony Dunne, the list is endless. In 1966 R.T.E. gave extensive television coverage to the World Cup, which didn’t please everyone in the country, especially the womenfolk. With just a single channel operating, and only for five or six hours a day, the decision to postpone or cancel regular programmes to accommodate Football’s blue riband event was not made easily. Somehow the station managed to find a middle ground, screening as much as possible of the films, soaps etc, whilst also transmitting vital World Cup matches, and later highlights. I think they may have gotten permission to extend somewhat their usual broadcasting hours of those years. It was then that soccer really began to catch the imagination of the youth of Rearcross, and Ireland as a whole.

The concrete yard behind the creamery was where all the action began, twenty or more boys would gather there every summer’s evening from 1966 to 1971. Kick off would be around 7 o’clock, and the only times our faces took on a sad appearance was when the sun began to disappear behind Dinny Kennedy’s hill. John Duggan (R.I.P.) and Pius Armshaw (R.I.P.) were amongst the stars of those encounters. John (“The Doug”) Duggan would begin work at 8-00AM each morning and arrive for play immediately after work, and continue to be fresh and full of life after up to four hours of football action. After a few years on concrete, the local lads decided that they were ready for some real action, and needed to display their skills on grass. Unfortunately, grass was in short supply for aspiring local soccer stars then. The time had definitely arrived for them to go out on grass, and it had to be achieved by hook or by crook. Eventually it happened, by crook. In 1971(July) a challenge was arranged against Urlingford. The Kilkenny outfit arrived expected to be greeted by a well organised and oiled local machine, as they had been led to expect. Instead they found their hosts had no field, and only a battered plastic football which had spent most of its useful life being unceremoniously blasted against cement walls by sturdy feet equipped with hobnail boots and other non-designer footwear. We eventually invaded a local farmer’s field when the owner had departed on a day outing. It was a “jumpers for goalposts’ affair. At the start is was just 8 or 9 aside, but players of all shapes, sizes, and ages, kept appearing as if from nowhere. The action continued for almost three hours, with at least forty players on the field at the end. Some of those who participated in that game lacked even the most basic of soccer knowledge”.

Well done to Willie Armshaw who scored another stunning goal in the 94th minute to earn a share of the spoils for Treaty United against Shelbourne last Fri evening.

Sympathies are extended to the Ryan & O’Dwyer families on the sad passing of Mary Ryan, Murroe, may she rest in peace.

Thanks to Club exile Simon Kennedy based in the US who submitted the following article after reminiscing with fellow Club exile Micheal O’Doherty:

Kylegorive’s Michael O’ Doherty was a stalwart for Rearcross FC back in the 90s before moving over to Boston, where he now resides. Now married with kids, Michael runs his own successful painting company out of Milton, Massachusetts, and got a good chuckle when asked to reminisce on his glory days in the green and white jersey.

Q: What was the most memorable goal you ever scored for Rearcross FC?
A: The first goal in some cup final win, I think it was against Newport. We were 2-0 down and came back to win!

Q: Who was the best player you ever played with for Rearcross FC?
A: The big goalie, Ollie Kennedy

Q: Who was the funniest member of the Rearcross FC panel down through the years?
A: Thomas Kennedy

Q: Who was the better penalty taker – you or Noel Deegan?
A: I was way way better than Deegan….. he just wouldn’t let me take them!

The local parish juvenile soccer league continues on this Sunday (2 pm) when Manchester United challenge Celtic. The United captain, Paddy O`Toole, led his team to victory in last year’s league, but he can expect a tough battle from Celtic, who are captained by Nora Nolan. Nora has been a leading member of the local history-making girls’ soccer team over the past few years.

Finally, the Circuit of Ireland was always symbolic of Easter in the locality back in the day and some footage from 1983 is included per link herein. Interesting to see the throngs of spectators in those days and indeed their proximity to the action!!. Video is ~12 minutes long, but some local terrain is included from the ~3.30 to ~5 minute mark. A complimentary drink is on offer once the pubs open! to the first person who can correctly identify the local area in question. The commentary in the video describes the stage “as special stage 22 just north of Killarney”, but a more local clue is “north of Bilboa Cross”. Appreciate some rally enthusiasts in copy to mailing list may have seen this video footage previously.

Many congrats & well done to Eimear Carey, Shanbally who has been selected to play with Treaty United in the Women’s National Senior League which is the highest level of women’s soccer in Ireland. Eimear commenced her soccer career with Rearcross FC before signing with Newport AFC Ladies and played with Treaty United U-17’s last season. This is a huge achievement for Eimear, so continued success to Eimear.

Hi All,
Please refer to link herein showing a superb strike by William Armshaw to win the 2019 FAI Junior Cup Final for St Michael’s against Sherrif YC on a 1-0 scoreline in a game played at Eamonn Deacy Park (formerly Terryland Park) Galway. William’s grandfather Liam was one of the Club’s original stalwarts and I’m sure William’s silken skills were genetically honed in Vora’s field back in the day. In fact scoring in finals would not be a first for the Armshaw clan as Liam himself scored in a 7 a-side Tournament final against Newport back in 1972, alas Rea lost on a 2-1 scoreline on that occasion with Nicky English bagging a brace for the visiting team.

Finally, on this weekend 30 years ago, Rearcross ‘A’ beat Moneygall on a 1-0 scoreline in a league game played in Bilboa, Liam Hammersley scored the winning goal for Rea.

Welcome to Rearcross FC Over 50’s & Associates Group. The initial intent & purpose of the group was to provide a means of staying in contact with past players/members and all those who assisted and supported the Club over the years and especially during the early stages of COVID. Changing lifestyles and social scene over past few years has meant that there is less scope for the older age group to meet up and stay in touch.

Group Chapter
1. Membership is free and open to over 50’s age group. Over 40’s or thereabouts! are deemed as associate members until they reach the 50 milestone.
2. The plan is to organize one or two get together events per year and a possible trip back to London at some point in the future.
3. Weekly email is issued to group mailing list including “Blasts from the Past” over 5-year intervals such as results, goal scorers and other news bits from time to time.
4. If you will like to be added to the mailing list on bcc basis, please email ger.kennedy@rearcrossfc.com
